Road to Peace

Philip spoke to is about the road to peace in Northern Ireland in relation to students their age.
Northern Ireland has two flags which divided people.
Irish = Catholic = Nationalist or Republican
British = Protestant =Nationalist
Irish speak Irish/Gaelic, play Gaelic football or hurling
British speak English, play football or cricket
In1921 the island of Ireland was divided into two states and Northern Ireland was formed. New government formed.
Sir James Craig, First Prime Minister, said Northern Ireland  will be a free state and a Protestant state.
Protestants got better jobs, houses, schools.
To vote now you had to be over 21, and own a home and land.
In the 1960s the Civil Rights Movement began.
Matches soon became tens of thousands of people. They soon removed the votingrequirement  to own land.
Martial Law was enacted by the British Army. Catholic communities reject the Army and form private armies.
1970 IRA formed
Protestant side started forming their own armies, too
Internment law said resistant members could be attested and held In prison indefinitely without a trial. 2000 were arrested, only 12 were Protestant.
U2 wrote a song Sunday Bloody Sunday about Lonsonderry. A march took place against internment.
At 9:05 eleven shots were fired and eleven women and children were killed. The British Army shot them as they tried to return home before the 9:00 curfew.
In 1972, northern Ireland was no longer able to elect their own government.
1973 at City Hall the IRA set off eleven bombs simultaneously.
Peace Walls began to be raised higher. Many feel they should now be removed.
Bobby Sands attested as an IRA member. Margaret Thatcher was angered by Internment Law, and renamed political prisoners.  Republican community/freedom fighters angered and began to protest in the prison.
1. Refused to wear uniforms and only wore blankets.
2. Refused to use bathrooms and smeared it on the walls.
3. Hunger strike. Bobby Sands died after 57 days.
He became a Member of Parliament while in prison. Never released to take a seat in Parliament.
Jerry Adams with the Clintons in 1997. All parties brought together in 99 days of negotiations.
Referendum said anyone over 18 could now vote. This 32-page book was sent, 16 pages for and against.
New Police laws said 50% had to be Catholic on the force
Now Northern Ireland can be known for tourism
Belfast safest capital city in Europe
Manchester United best player from Northern Ireland
Keep focused on the road ahead! Younger generation will deliver the new Northern Ireland. The future will be painted for all sides!
Northern Ireland is appreciative of the US and their role in The Troubles.

The Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede

I The legend of the giant Finn McCool? Oh yes, 'tis real!! For geology lovers (Dad!), today was stunning. Volcanic activity from the time the continents separated from Pangaea formed basalt columns in hexagonal shapes up from the ocean floor, and these ancient stone formations are there today. (Remember the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics when they showed the countries of the UK? A choir was filmed singing at Giant's Causeway. Game of Thrones on HBO is filmed there, too!) We had a tour guide and got to walk out on the causeway, seeing Ireland and Scotland from our steps in Northern Ireland. Awesome.
From Giant's Causeway we went to Carrick-a-Rede for a looooong hike almost entirely downhill to start...so all uphill to return! We crossed a rope bridge to an island, originally built by and for salmon fishermen. (The salmon have been depleted there now.) The rope bridge is about 90 feet above the sea and is 60 feet across. Boy, can it bounce!! Really cool to go across.
Crossing the bridge on the way back with Tammy!!

Northern Ireland

Wow...Belfast!! So much to see and do and learn!! Rich history for an official country only since 1920. Republicans=those loyal to the Republic of Ireland with a wish for one Irish land. Unionists=those loyal to the United Kingdom and British rule.
Sinn Fein=pronounced shinn fee-in, the party of union, working class who have gotten Members of Parliament elected while in jail!
We were able to have an amazing two-hour tour from Billy while driving around Belfast. There was a parade in the mural neighborhood, so we had trouble seeing too many, but he and Charlie, our local coach driver, managed to find a great route to see murals on the walls...and then, in front of 6 Police vehicles, we all stopped, got off the bus, and signed the Wall of Peace. We are all Northern Irish!!
We saw the docks where Titanic and her twins were built, and saw the Titanic Museum which stands the actual height of the ships' bows!!
Later in the afternoon we broke into groups and I took 11 kids to Victoria Square Mall for a couple hours. We had a great time shopping British fashion!
After dinner the leaders walked to Community Court for a few minutes in the middle of the Belfast Blues Festival...seeing murals of famous Belfast and Northern Irish residents...lights hanging between close buildings, great music, posh people...we wished we could have stayed!!
Today we are headed to Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Carrickfergus Castle, and Giants' Causeway. Should be great!
